One day she was Dolly Parton. The next, PJ Harvey.
She was also Cher, Aaliyah, David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen.
On Thursday: Marilyn Monroe.
New Jersey singer Halsey, known for her chameleonic makeup and style, has been showing off her transformation abilities in the run-up to the release of her fifth album “The Great Impersonator,” out Thursday night.
Halsey, 30, born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, lived in various Jersey towns growing up, including Clark and Franklin, and is an alum of Warren Hills Regional High School in Washington Township, Warren County. Her new album is a trip through the sounds of various decades — or what Halsey would’ve sounded like had she become a pop star in those times.
The singer embraced the spirit of the Halloween season to dress up and strike a pose as various famous faces from music and Hollywood. She often does her own makeup (she has her own makeup line), and did so again for these transformations.
Since the album is an hour away from release and she’s now officially done with her run of impersonations, here’s a rundown of all the looks Halsey shared on Instagram over the last few weeks. You can find them in order below with a full list (original celebrity photos she’s copying are in the next slides), which includes comments the singer made about various artists who inspired songs on the album.
1. Dolly Parton
2. PJ Harvey, “one of the most influential artists of my lifetime.”
3. Kate Bush
4. Cher: “Undisputed Queen. One of my favorite Cher songs, ‘Dark Lady,’ was a number 1 hit in 1974. Still number 1 in my heart today.”
5. David Bowie, “Ziggy Stardust, The Starman, The Thin White Duke, The Picasso of Pop, Major Tom, The Master of Reinvention and The Chameleon of Rock…”
6. Amy Lee from Evanescence, “my OG dark rock queen.”
7. Dolores O’Riordan from The Cranberries: “Not much transformation necessary here, since I was basically born Dolores’ long lost daughter, but I couldn’t do the series without honoring this incredible woman.”
8. Stevie Nicks, “the mystical madame herself … There were so many looks to choose from but I HAD to invoke this witchy ballerina from ‘Rumors.’ That pose was NOT easy to do while controlling the tulle! Stevie, as we know, is made of magic.”
9. Bruce Springsteen: “NJ’s finest … this one requires no explanation, I’m a Jersey girl :).”
10. Linda Ronstadt: “A tribute to her endless versatility, a true chameleon.”
11. Britney Spears: “The first superstar who ever inspired me. There were infinite Britney looks to choose from but I had to do this iconic album!”
12. Halsey herself: “The new album takes place across decades, so I feel it’s only right to honor the album I wrote a decade ago … Badlands Halsey, circa 2015.”
13. Aaliyah, “queen baby girl” — On Halsey’s song “Letter to God”: “I layered this song with vocals from my son when he was a baby, inspired by (Aaliyah’s) ‘Are You That Somebody.’”
14. Joni Mitchell, “my favorite lyricist of all time … I saw Joni at the bowl last night and it was one of the greatest privileges of my life.”
15. Fiona Apple, “Chief inspo for my entire life.”
16. Tori Amos: “I grew up on Tori and have always considered her in a class of her own. This song (”Life of the Spider”), the most personal on the album, is just me and my piano. Because that’s all Tori ever needed to rip your heart to shreds.”
17. Björk: “My first album with a title track. Influenced by the coolest, most ethereal being to ever exist.”
18. Marilyn Monroe, “the most impersonated woman in history. A woman who eventually had to impersonate herself, day after day; asking the question ‘Want to see me become her?’”
