an antique Ethiopian scroll which has been encased and sewn into a leather talisman amulet for the purpose of every day wearable protection, healing and blessings. Each protective amulet also known as a Kitabe was made specifically for an individual for a focused reason and usually the scroll was made of goatskin which had been worked into parchment like material called vellum which was rolled or folded before being wrapped and sewn into the leather casing. Usually the writing on the scroll is in handmade black and red paint or ink and is written in Ethiopic Ge'ez a language no longer used except for religious purposes. The scrolls were inscribed by religious scribes, dabtaras (unordained clerics) or priests and contain Christian oriented prayers and / or stories or pertinent text from Ethiopian Christian Manuscripts / Bibles sometimes pictures are added
