Mays Food Products Incorporated was organized in 1920 under the laws of Maine. The company, based in New Orleans, Louisiana, took over the food packing business established in 1914 by the firm of Deblieux and Mays. The company's plants were located in the South where there were two crops a year making it possible for the company to operate longer than similar plants in the North.
Among the products handled were tomatoes, figs, okra, sweet potatoes, strawberries, beans, shrimps and oysters which are consumed for the most part in the South and South West. In 1920 over 100,000 cases of canned goods and several thousand barrels of strawberries were reported to have been prepared. Products handled were obtained near at hand and labor was comparatively cheap.
In 1921, arrangements were made for the erection of a cannery in Gloster, Mississippi, with citizens of the town agreeing to take ,000 of the common stock of the company in order to finance the construction of the new plant. It was regarded as an important addition to the agricultural community inasmuch as it afforded the farmers an outlet for their surplus vegetables.
